Meet Monique

By Pempho Singo

Born in 2003, Lilongwe-based Monique Kamenya is a female Afro-music artist. She began making music in April 2024 and has so far recorded eight singles and filmed two music videos. The artist claims she has a lot of unreleased material but lacks the funds to release it.

Monique intends to release new singles titled ‘Ndapata,’ ‘Pali Bills,’ and ‘Pano’. The song ‘Ndapata’ describes a person who has discovered true love and is acknowledging it. While ‘Pali Bills’ depicts the daily life of a business owner who struggles to grow because they are constantly paying bills that never end.

The artist intends to release one song in January of next year and another single within the next two months. Monique’s music is currently only available on YouTube, but she plans to make it available on other streaming platforms in the future.

Monique has never collaborated with a famous artist because they usually charge a high fee. When asked if any males tried to take advantage of her by having intercourse with her in exchange for sponsorship, she replied, “Yes, there are many of them, but I just act serious so they do not try again. Overall, I believe that I should simply work hard and trust that God’s timing will be the best for me.

When asked why she wants to release more singles despite having 8 tracks already, she explained that she wants to grow her fan base first before releasing an EP or album. The singer stated that she currently works with Ayoo Land as her producer, but she previously worked with HKP on songs such as ‘Ndidziwe’ and ‘Mashasha’.

Monique does not have a set fee for collaboration, but she is only willing to work with another artist who understands her worth and can provide money for studio fees, transportation, and food so that their project runs smoothly. Another important factor she considers when collaborating with another artist is whether or not the other artist promotes the project sufficiently, such as by filming a music video.
